EDUCATIONAL STUDIES

URC programs are designed to provide urban residents with top-quality education, training and health care services. We believe every client should have the opportunity to develop themselves to their fullest potential without worry of funding and hardships. Many of our clients have the willingness to improve their situation but lack the training or education to get them off the welfare role.

At URC educational programs are open to any individual who wishes to improve his/her academic competency and/or employable skills. Based on assessment results and the desire of the individual, clients can benefit from the following courses:

PRE-GED TRAINING: Designed for individuals who have not completed their secondary education, are proficient in English and are below the eighth grade competency level. Pre-GED training is to develop the student’s academic competency levels in the five subject areas tested in the General Educational Development (GED) Exam.
GED TRAINING: Designed for individuals who have not completed their secondary education, are proficient in English and are above the eighth grade competency level but below the twelfth grade level. GED training is to develop the student’s academic competency levels in the five subject areas tested in the General Educational Development (GED) Exam
ADULT BASIC EDUCATION TRAINING: Designed for individuals who have completed their secondary education but are in need of improving their basic educational skills to be successful workers and consumers. The focus is to have clients become better prepared to work in today’s competitive job market. Students will learn the necessary skills to score competently on employer’s basic skills test.
COMPUTER LITERACY: Designed for individuals who wish to learn basic computing skills for the workplace and enhance his/her employable skills. Students must have a competency level above the ninth grade level to participate in this program. The curriculum is designed to introduce basic office software packages. Our students learn Window 95, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher. These classes are taught at three levels of experience and comprehension.
COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY: Designed for individuals who wish to learn the inner workings of computers. Students learn to rebuild, refurbish and recycle computers.
JOB SEARCH SKILLS: Designed for individuals who need the confidence and skills to improve their chances of obtaining and keeping employment successfully. Important for individuals who have no employment history or are long-time recipients of public assistance. Curriculum includes: preparing a resume, writing a cover letter, filling out an application, successful interviewing, finding a job, and keeping a job.
Both individual and group counseling are provided throughout each curriculum and each instructor will provide individual tutoring whenever necessary.
