Community Programs

Beyond Bars

July 1, 2013 New Jersey Department of Corrections awarded Urban Renewal Corp. (2) two Level 3 residential community release programs. Urban 1, is a male facility housing 60 residents, located at 743 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Newark, NJ.Urban ll is also a female facility housing 30 residents located at 446 Eastern Parkway in Irvington NJ. URC’s primary focus of our Level 3 Work Release Program is employment and/or preparation for employment through education. As such, a key feature of our program is the utilization of our Urban Renewal Training and Development Center in Kearny, NJ. The Center incorporates a multi-faceted approach that integrates job training, job placement, education and life skills programs. According to the new Jersey Department of Corrections, the overarching goal of the Office of Community Programs is to provide assessment driven services and programming for inmates preparing to return to the communities, through the provision of performance-based residential community release program placement. Assignment to a community program provides the opportunity for eligible inmates to reintegrate to the community, through a structured, supervised residential program.  Research has shown that inmates who are afforded the opportunity to participate in community programs are less likely to commit additional crimes and/or be returned to prison. URC has developed a comprehensive package of services designed specifically to address the needs for this targeted inmate population. Our holistic ‘one-stop’ Residential Community Work Release Program delivers a full range of essential services, grounded in Evidence Based Practice, designed to interrupt an offender’s pattern of criminality.
