SOCIAL SERVICES:

Individuals seeking shelter and assistance come from varied backgrounds with a multiplicity of personal life and health problems. With this in mind, each resident is required to see a social worker upon entering our program and within twenty-four hours assessed and working on a mutually agreed development program towards a self-sufficient lifestyle. Assessment of an individual includes short and long-term goals, barriers to obtaining these goals, and component activities that will be undertaken to reach these goals (i.e., remedial studies, life skills, mental health counseling, and detox). Dates, hours of participation, and job training sites are all identified in the plan and updated as needed. Counselors at URC provide exceptional support and guidance from the first day of entry and throughout a client’s development. We also avail ourselves to graduates of our program with a continuum of support services.

We extend our greatest efforts to utilize already existing community programs and services whenever possible. However, when a need is not satisfied within the community, or is so great within our facility that a self-contained program better serves our clients, we strive to develop and enhance our own social services. Some in-house programs include:

SECOND CHANCE PROGRAM: Designed to help every homeless person residing in one of our six facilities to acquire job related skills by assisting a staff member with administrative or operational tasks. Our goal is to help the client to develop and enhance his/her employable skills while providing an additional reference to their resume.
LIFE SKILLS: Designed for individuals who wish to develop the skills and knowledge to live successful independent lives as informed adults. Curriculum includes: daily living skills, nutrition, personal hygiene, money and finance, travel and transportation, communication and telephone skills, self-esteem, parenting, effective time management, responsibility, and self-discipline.
DRUG AND ALCOHOL SUPPORT GROUPS: Many of our clients address serious substance abuse problems. Intervention and assistance are a primary target to lead clients on a healthy road back to mainstream society. NA and AA meeting are held five times weekly offering recovering individuals an opportunity to share experiences in a comfortable atmosphere. One-on-one counseling is also available for clients wishing to partake in a self-reliant program.
WOMEN’S WORKSHOP: Designed to help economically disadvantaged individuals understand the issues facing women within a support group setting. Some topics of discussion include: health issues, disease, birth control, parenting, child-care, self-esteem, nutrition, abuse, and money management.
GENERAL NUTRITION CLASS: Designed to help improve the nutritional adequacy of the population we serve. This program contributes to personal development and well being by using a variety of teaching techniques. Participants are taught the relationship of diet to health, nutritional value of foods, how to buy more food for the money, and how to prevent food spoilage and food-borne illnesses.
